Filing the Claim for Social Security Disability Benefits
We – or you – can file your application for disability insurance benefits over the internet. Go to ssa.gov and follow the instructions, or contact us and we can do it for you. You will need to provide lists of your doctors, the medication you take, and the jobs you have held in the last 15 years. You will also be asked to provide personal information such as any marriages or divorces and minor children’s names and dates of birth.
The month you file your application for benefits can control what month your benefits will begin. Social Security disability benefits can be paid no more than 12 months prior to the month in which you file your application. Supplemental security income can be paid only for months after you file the application. This means that for both kinds of benefits, every month you delay filing the claim can mean a loss of income for you and your family.
